Gal Gadot Confirmed for Kenneth Branagh's 'Death on the Nile' Adaptation

Director-actor Kenneth Branagh will return as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot in his 2019 big screen adaptation of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile, the follow-up to 2017's crowd-pleasing Murder on the Orient Express, which he also starred in and directed.

Filming has not yet begun, but there's been some movement in production, with Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot set to take on the role of Linnet Ridgeway Doyle, reports ComingSoon.net.

If you're not familiar with the story, originally published in 1937, Death on the Nile is set in Egypt, where Poirot is on vacation. He's off the clock from his detective duties, but when there's a murder, he finds he can't turn his back on investigating. The 1978 film adaptation starred Peter Ustinov as Poirot, who was joined by Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Maggie Smith, Angela Lansbury and David Niven. Lois Chiles played Linnet Ridgeway Doyle, the role for which Gadot will be stepping in.

Doyle is described as a British heiress, who marries her former best friend's fiancee. She is the catalyst in this story, approaching Poirot in Egypt, asking him to help stop her frenemy-turned-nemesis from hounding her. Poirot declines the request, but really can't get away from this love triangle because all four of them board the same steamboat, set to tour the Nile.

Apparently, "girl code" was not recognized in the 1930s. We jest, clearly there were social standards in place to avoid this sort of romantic usurp, but they were ignored by Linnet when sabotaging the relationship between Jacqueline De Bellefort and Simon Doyle, still to be cast.

It will be hard to match the 1978 all-star lineup, but Branagh is on the right track, recruiting Gadot. The Israelian actress wowed audiences as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Fans weren't waiting long for more of her on-screen as the Amazonian princess, with Gadot starring in 2017's Wonder Woman, giving us the backstory on how this superhero came to be. Also in 2017, she reprised the role once again for Justice League.

Gadot is now filming Wonder Woman 1984, which we can look for on November 1, 2019.
