Fox CEO Gary Newman Talks About the Possibility of More 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'
There may be more Buffy the Vampire Slayer in our future. Or, perhaps not...
Speaking at an INTV (Innovative TV) conference in Jerusalem this morning (March 13), Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman hinted at the possibility of a Buffy reboot: "It's something we talk about frequently," he confessed.
Buuut then he backtracked, saying he may not "be able to get out of the building alive," if he were to overcommit, reports Deadline Hollywood.
Okay, okay, we can work with that. Good to know that Buffy IS on their radar and not necessarily collecting dust on the shelf.
Newman went on to praise the show's creator, saying, "Joss Whedon is one of the greatest creators we've ever worked for. When Joss decides it's time, we'll do it."
Flattery can go a long way. But, can it woo back Whedon and get him to pick up a show that went off air 15 years ago? As of now, Whedon, who's currently working on Agents of S.H.I.E.LD., has yet to chime in. But let's give him a moment — the conversation only just happened this morning.
According to Deadline, the idea of a Buffy revival came out of a discussion about reboots in general, which Newman has a stance on: "Reboots aren’t actually a focus for us. Most of the time it starts with a creator coming in. Admittedly, we chased The X-Files for a while. But when we first brought it back it was Chris (Carter) and David (Duchovny) and Gillian (Anderson). The 24 franchise… we’ll always want it.”
While there is no concrete answer about whether or not we can expect more Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it is interesting to hear about the inner workings of TV giants like Fox, and how shows are greenlit.
(FYI, we included Buffy in our recent roundup, 10 TV Shows From the 1990s We'd Still Watch Today — so you know our vote.)
Of course, the audience has a role in the decision. So, if you're loving the idea of a Buffy reboot, tweet Joss Whedon and see if he's into it too.
Would you welcome a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer?
