Following Freddie Mercury and Elton John, Culture Club frontman Boy George is the latest British pop icon to be getting a big screen biopic.

According to Variety, Sacha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) is attached to write and direct the movie about the famously witty singer-songwriter, whose real name is George O'Dowd. Currently untitled, the film is in the works at MGM, with Boy George on board as an exec producer.

“There is no filmmaker better suited than Sacha Gervasi to tell George’s confessional story with the irreverence and emotion it deserves,” said MGM Motion Picture Group president Jonathan Glickman. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with both of them to bring this remarkably honest and wildly entertaining tale to audiences around the world.”

Boy George's life certainly lends itself to a terrific rollercoaster of a movie. Raised in south London in a working-class Irish Catholic family, his flamboyant androgynous dress sense made him a leading light of the New Romantic movement. As lead singer of Culture Club, he became one of the most recognizable figures of the '80s, scoring a string of international hits with reggae-influenced new wave tunes including "Karma Chameleon" and "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" At the height of his fame, he even guest-starred on an episode of The A-Team.

He later battled drug addiction and spent four months in prison in 2009 after being convicted of assault and false imprisonment of a male escort. In recent years, he's bounced back as a coach on the U.K. and Australian versions of The Voice, and reformed Culture Club as a popular touring act. Along with the band, he performed and chatted on The Graham Norton Show last year.

The Boy George movie follows the remarkable success of Freddie Mercury and Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which grossed $903 million at the global box office and won four Oscars, including Best Actor for Rami Malek. Elton John biopic Rocketman hits theaters Friday (May 31).
