First Look: Timothée Chalamet Rocks a Top Hat as Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka in Origin Movie

This is not a drill: Timothée Chalamet has shared the first photo of himself as Willy Wonka.
The 25-year-old actor plays Roald Dahl's eccentric chocolatier in an upcoming prequel movie, Wonka, due out in March 2023. Directed by Paddington's Paul King, the musical fantasy film will center on Wonka's early days before he opens his enchanting world-famous chocolate factory.
Chalamet's Instagram post has already been liked more than 4.3 million times. Actress Rebel Wilson commented underneath the photo that she is "all about this."Timothee Chalamet Wonka(Photo: Instagram)
On Twitter, some fans have
noted the similarity between Chalamet's Willy Wonka garb and Peter Capaldi's outfit as Mr. Micawber in the 2019 movie The Personal History of David Copperfield.
Another fan tweeted appreciatively: "This looks to be an amazing casting choice—that’s a young Willy Wonka if I’ve ever seen one."
Chalamet follows in the footsteps of two previous screen Wonkas: Gene Wilder, who portrayed Dahl's kooky candy maker in 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and Johnny Depp, who played him in 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The Chalamet-led movie certainly has an impressive supporting cast: Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Matt Lucas, Paterson Joseph, and Jim Carter are all co-starring. It's shooting now at various locations across England.
