First Look: Matthew Rhys as Perry Mason in Trailer and Poster

You may know Welsh actor Matthew Rhys from his role in The Americans (2013-2018) as a Russian spy. He's now taking on the iconic role of private investigator Perry Mason, made famous by Raymond Burr in the 1950s and '60s. The HBO origin series will kick off on June 21.

The new series is set in 1932 Los Angeles, with Mason living paycheck-to-paycheck. He's a low-rent PI, making ends meet, prior to him becoming a defense lawyer (as seen in the original series).

In the first look trailer, he sits down to a meeting where he's asked to take on a new case. The client refers to him as a "detective," with Mason clarifying, saying, 'It's a fancy word for a busybody."

We appreciate his honesty and humbleness:

The first episode revolves around a kidnapping gone wrong, resulting in the tragic death of a one-year-old little boy. Each episode in the eight-part series will cover a new case.

If you think you spotted Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany in the above trailer, you are right. That's her with the platinum blonde hair at 2:37. Maslany plays Sister Alice, who says to Mason, "Mr. Mason, it's hard to believe you are the right person for this job." He gives a very straightforward answer, "I'm the only person for this job. "

You can also look for John Lithgow (The Crown) as E.B. Jonathan, an attorney who advises Mason on the case.

HBO recently revealed the character poster, with a very telling caption:
