Today brings our first look at Beyond Paradise, the Death in Paradise spin-off series in which Kris Marshall reprises his role as DI Humphrey Goodman.

Marshall starred in Death in Paradise for four seasons before departing in 2017. The spin-off series sees him join the police force in Shipton Abbott, a fictional town in southwest England, where his fiancée Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) plans to open her own restaurant.

As you may remember, the two characters had a rather bumpy romance in Death in Paradise before Humphrey put his heart on the line by leaving Saint Marie, the fictional Caribbean island where the show is set, to join Martha in London.

Though the first-look image looks pretty idyllic, a plot synopsis for Beyond Paradise suggests Humphrey and Martha won't be enjoying a quiet life in the country.

It teases: "Each week the team will be faced with a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle, and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses."

Beyond Paradise began filming in August, when three new cast members were announced. Zahra Ahmadi (Innocent, Doctor Who) and Dylan Llewellyn (Derry Girls, Big Boys) are playing police officers, named DS Esther Williams and PC Kelby Hartford respectively, while Felicity Montagu (Nighty Night, Alan Partridge) is portraying a civilian support person called Margo Martins.

The spinoff series is a co-production between the BBC and BritBox, and counts Death in Paradise creator Robert Thorogood as its co-creator. To begin with, it will comprise six hour-long episodes, though everyone involved will obviously be hoping it becomes a long-running hit like its parent show, which is soon to return for its 12th season.
