First Look: Helen Mirren Goes to the Dark Side in the Supernatural Thriller 'Winchester'

Sure, it's fun to see Dame Helen Mirren change it up, and take on the role of a baddie in the Fast and the Furious franchise. But, now she's getting back to what we know her best for: the dramatics.

In her new film,Winchester, Mirren portrays real-life person Sarah Winchester, the heiress to Winchester firearms in the 1800s.

And here is the first look of her in character. If we may say so, it's quite dark. Literally. She is clad in black, as if going to a funeral:

And, she may well be (going to a funeral that is). Winchester and her husband lost their only daughter just a few weeks after the child was born. Her father-in-law passed away in 1880, followed by her husband in 1881 to tuberculosis. She came to believe she was cursed, losing family members so unexpectedly, and it was the spirits of those killed by Winchester firearms that were haunting her.

Apparently, she put all of her time and effort into building a huge labyrinth-like mansion to trap and catch the ghosts, reports the New York Times. Oh, we should also include, she put in money... she was quite rich owning 50 percent of the Winchester company at this time.

Needless to say, the people around her thought she was losing her mind, as depicted in the film. But there was one person, who started off a skeptic, psychiatrist Eric Price, played by Jason Clarke (Knight of Cups), who goes to visit Winchester at her "compound," and finds... this may not be just in her head?

Winchester, based on true events, but not quite a biopic, considering... will be in theaters in 2018.

Are you pulled in by Mirren's entrancing gaze?
