Emma Thompson Joins the Cast of 'How to Make a Girl'October 23, 2018
British journalist Caitlin Moran is turning her 2014 semi-autobiographical novel, How to Build a Girl, into a movie. And she just got one step closer to production, securing Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) to star in a pivotal scene as a magazine editor, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The story is set in the 1990s and revolves around Johanna Morrigan (Beanie Feldstein), a teenage girl devastated after embarrassing herself on local TV. She doesn’t see any way of coming back from her disappointing “15 minutes” and sets out to reinvent herself as a music critic by the name of Dolly Wilde.
Alison Owen of Monumental Pictures, the company producing the movie, talked to THR about Thompson's role in filming, saying, "We had fantasized about Emma Thompson playing the editor since we first spoke with Caitlin about this project. I think Caitlin might have cut the scene if Emma hadn’t agreed."
Oof! That's pretty extreme, but it seems things have worked out as
Owen went on to say, "Thank goodness we struck lucky. We feel blessed."
In addition to Thompson, we can also look for Chris O'Dowd (Moone Boy), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) and Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders).
Beanie Feldstein, who most recently starred in 2017's Lady Bird as Julie Steffans, will play the school girl-turned-music critic. You can also spot her in 2016's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.
How to Build a Girl is set to release in 2019.
