Emma Thompson Speaks Candidly About 'Challenging' Nude Scene: 'I Don't Think I Could've Done It Before'
We know (and admire) Dame Emma Thompson for always telling it like it is, and she's spoken with typical candor and relatability about shooting an upcoming nude scene.
In the forthcoming comedy-drama movie Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, the Oscar-winning actress plays a retired widow who hires the title character – a sex worker played by Peaky Blinders actor Daryl McCormack – for a night of intimacy.
During the movie's virtual premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, Entertainment Weekly reports, Thompson explained that she, McCormack, and director Sophie Hyde conducted rehearsals for the scene in the nude in order to make themselves feel more comfortable.
"Sophie, Daryl, and I rehearsed entirely nude and talked about our bodies, talked about our relationship with our bodies, drew them, discussed the things that we find difficult about, things we like about them, described one another's bodies," she said.
"It's very challenging to be nude at 62," Thompson added, pointing out that in the film her character "stands in front of a mirror alone and... drops her robe."
Thompson also spoke honestly about the additional scrutiny faced by women – especially older women – who appear on film and TV.
"Nothing has changed in the dreadful demands made upon women in the real-world world but also in acting," Thompson said. "This thing of having to be thin is still the same as it ever was, and actually in some ways I think it's worse now."
"I don't think I could've done it before the age that I am," she said of the upcoming nude scene. "And yet, of course, the age that I am makes it extremely challenging because we aren't used to seeing untreated bodies on the screen."
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande premiered Sunday (January 23) at the Sundance Film Festival. Watch this space for further details on the movie's U.S. and U.K. release details.
