Edgar Wright Forces Kumail Nanjiana to Eat Brussel Sprouts After Winning Oscars Bet
It's a well known fact that nobody likes brussels sprouts, except Baby Driver director Edgar Wright, that is. He loves them so much, in fact, he took comedian Kumail Nanjiani out for a slap-up meal this week that consisted of nothing but the tiny green cabbages.
The gesture wasn't entirely down to magnamity. Kumail, in fact, hates brussels sprouts, and had only agreed to eat a plate of them on one condition: if The Big Sick, the romcom he wrote with his wife, Emily V. Gordon, was nominated for an Oscar.
The Shaun of the Dead director was sure that it would be, and, sure enough, fast forward to this week and The Big Sick has been nominated in the Best Original Screenplay category.
Kumail responded at first with shock and then joy on his Twitter feed, before Edgar reminded him of his brussel sprouts promise — and invited him out to dinner that Wednesday (January 24) to celebrate.
It wouldn't be a celebration if there wasn't some champagne to wash it down with:

And, as any good director would, Edgar was there to capture every expression on the face of his principal actor:
And here's some bonus photos of him struggling a little more with the task, me helping him out and his actual expression on completing the effort. Really this should be up for Best Documentary Short (cc @TheAcademy) pic.twitter.com/oSXreqIRJr

We think Hugh Grant would be proud.
Kumail was more than a good sport, tweeting: "I've never been happier to lose a bet & eat a bowl of something I dislike. Thank you @edgarwright!"
The Big Sick is up against Get Out, Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Shape of Water for the coveted gong. And if it wins, what then? Will Edgar force poor Kumail to eat a plate of chopped liver? Take a bath in a tub full of baked beans?
We'll find out when winners are announced on Sunday 4 March.
Do you like the sound of champagne and brussel sprouts?
