This is not a drill! Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has signed up for the new Suicide Squad movie.

Capaldi, who played the Twelfth Doctor from 2013 to 2017, has joined the cast of The Suicide Squad in an unknown role. Will he be adding "superhero" to his résumé alongside "Timelord"? Fingers crossed!

The Suicide Squad, Warner Bros.' sequel to its 2016 box office smash Suicide Squad, already has quite the cast. Idris Elba is on board, and though he was originally due to portray Deadshot, Will Smith's character from the first movie, he's now going to be originating his own character.

Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis are all reprising their roles from the first movie, joined by other newcomers including John Cena, David Dastmalchian (Ant-Man), and Portuguese rising star Daniela Melchior.

Along with Capaldi, Variety reports that SNL cast member Pete Davidson is in talks to join the movie. Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn is writing and directing, and Warner Bros. has set a release date of Aug. 6, 2021.

We don't know exact plot details for the sequel, but it's sure to follow another mission – or missions – for the so-called "suicide squad" that gives the movie its title. Created by DC Comics in the late '80s, they're a team of incarcerated supervillains who take on high-risk secret tasks in exchange for parole or reduced prison sentences.

Before then, we'll see Capaldi in a very different kind of movie, Charles Dickens adaptation The Personal History of David Copperfield, which is due to premiere at this month's Toronto International Film Festival. His co-stars in that one include Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Gwendoline Christie, Ben Whishaw, and Hugh Laurie.
