It won Julie Andrews an Academy Award, it's an eternal childhood classic and if there's a more optimistically mournful lament in the Disney canon than "Chim Chim Cher-ee", the world simply is not ready to take it. That said, EW is reporting that there's a live-action sequel to Mary Poppins in the works, set 20 years after the original, and created by the team behind Into the Woods. Director Rob Marshal and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt have brought in scriptwriter David Magee (Finding Neverland, Life of Pi), and have set their movie in 1930s London. They will be using as source material parts of the P.L. Travers stories that didn't make the 1964 original. This will deviate from the classic idea of a sequel in that none of the original cast are expected to resume their roles more than 50 years on. However, it's also not a reboot, because the action takes place after the first movie, and there are several returning characters, so even though Mary Poppins 2 is unlikely to be the title, what else would such an endeavor be called? As for the music, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) are reported to be working on the score and some new songs, with the blessing of Richard Sherman, co-composer of the songs from the original movie with his brother Robert. And of course if it's a massive hit, that means the stage has been cleared for a sequel to Saving Mr. Banks, in about 49 years. See more: First Look: Emma Thompson as ‘Mary Poppins’ Author P.L.
