Director Christopher Nolan Doesn't Have a Smartphone or Use Email

While Christopher Nolan's films may be complex, he keeps the tech side of his life pretty basic. Nolan, who is known for twisty-turvy sci-fi movies like 2010's Inception and 2014's Interstellar, keeps internet access to a minimum.

In an interview with People magazine, he recapped the reasoning behind it, saying, "It's true that I don't have a smartphone. I have a little flip phone that I take with me from time to time. I'm easily distractible so I don't really want to have access to the internet every time when I'm bored."

This doesn't sound like a situation of detaching, it sounds like he never attached to the digital age at all.

He goes on to describe the freedom this gives him, saying, "I do a lot of my best thinking in those kind of in-between moments that people now fill with online activity, so it benefits me. When I'm working, I'm just surrounded by, I mean, everybody's got a phone. I can't hide, so I'm very easy to get in touch with when I'm working."

Nolan also discusses using email, or for that matter, not using email: "I just have never been particularly interested in communicating with people in that way. I prefer just calling people from a landline. So yeah, I mean, everybody finds their own way to communicate with people and deal with things."

So, there you have it, if you'd like to contact Nolan via email, you cannot. You'll have to track him down on his flip phone... if he decides to bring it with him.

In the meantime, you can have a catch-up with him and check out his latest film Tenet (also sci-fi):
