Oscar-winning British director Danny Boyle has said he is "not cut out" for franchise movies after his difficult experience working on Bond 25.

The Slumdog Millionaire filmmaker departed the landmark 25th Bond movie last August, less than six months after he'd been hired to direct it. A tweet from the Bond franchise's official account said at the time that "creative differences" were behind Boyle's decision.

Addressing his exit in a new interview, Boyle not Metro: "I learned my lesson that I am not cut out [for franchises], otherwise you’re digging in the same hole. I am better not quite in the mainstream franchise movies, is the honest answer."

Boyle previous called his departure from Bond 25 "a great shame," telling Empire in March that he and regular co-writer John Hodge were working "very, very well" on the movie.

"It wasn’t finished, but it could have been really good," he added, before sending his best wishes to the director who replaced him, Cary Fukunaga. Bond 25, which now has a script co-written by Killing Eve's Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is shooting now for an April 8, 2020 release.

Meanwhile, Boyle is currently promoting his new movie Yesterday, a musical-comedy film written by Love, Actually's Richard Curtis. It stars Himesh Patel (U.K. soap EastEnders) as a struggling musician who wakes up in a world where he is the only person who remembers the Beatles.

As he becomes famous by passing off their songs as his own, he risks losing the support of his girlfriend, played by Downton Abbey and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again's Lily James.
