Dame Judi Dench and Dan Stevens Start Shooting Noël Coward Adaptation 'Blithe Spirit'

Are you ready to see Dame Judi Dench in full-on comedy mode again? The beloved actress has just started shooting a new movie adaptation of Sir Noël Coward's classic stage play Blithe Spirit, in which she's co-starring opposite Dan Stevens.

Dench is playing the popular role of Madame Arcarti, an eccentric medium invited to conduct a seance by crime writer Charles (Stevens). He only wants to use Arcarti as creative inspiration for his next novel, but his scheme backfires massively when she seemingly summons the spirit of his deceased first wife (Leslie Mann) – much to the horror of his new wife, Ruth (Isla Fisher)!

Arcati was famously played by Dame Margaret Rutherford in a 1945 movie adaptation of Blithe Spirit from director Sir David Lean. More recently, Dame Angela Lansbury won Tony and Olivier awards for portraying her with lots of physical comedy on the Broadway and West End stages.

According to Variety, the new Blithe Spirit movie is being directed by Edward Hall, best known for his TV work on Downton Abbey and The Durrells.

“The cast and team that have gathered together to realize this colorful and original comedy are testament to the enduring appeal of Noel Coward’s unique story,” Hall said today as shooting got underway.

The movie's supporting cast also includes popular British thesps Emilia Fox (Silent Witness), James Fleet (Four Weddings and a Funeral), and Julian Rhind-Tutt (Harlots).

But before we see her in Blithe Spirit, Dench will return to the big screen in Cats, an all-star adaptation of the long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber stage musical whose cast includes Idris Elba, Sir Ian McKellen, and James Corden.
