Casting News: Toby Jones and Anthony Boyle to Star in BBC War Hero Drama 'Danny Boy'
Toby Jones (Sherlock, Detectorists) and rising star Anthony Boyle (Ordeal By Innocence, The Plot Against America) have been cast in Danny Boy, a new BBC TV movie about a real-life war hero accused of murder.
Boyle will play Brian Wood, a well respected British soldier who was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in the Battle of Danny Boy during the Iraq War. Jones will co-star as Phil Shiner, a human rights lawyer who heavily dented Wood's reputation by accusing him of war crimes.
Their high-profile legal tussle ultimately led to one of the U.K.'s largest ever public inquiries, the Al-Sweady Inquiry, but to say too much more about what happened would definitely be spoiler-y.
Danny Boy – which is the working title – has been written by Robert Jones (Murder, Party Animals) and is being directed by Sam Miller (I May Destroy You, BBC America's Luther).
Miller described the film as "a candid and subtle delve into a troubled sequence in recent history that sets up an undertow threatening all those involved," telling the BBC: "The intimate questions raised about the nature of soldiering and the political ramifications are never more prescient."
Toby Jones added: “Robert has written an extraordinarily compelling, intelligent and nuanced script, and it’s a real honor to be working with Danny Boy’s exceptional cast and creative team to bring it to the screen.”
Shooting on Danny Boy is underway now, but broadcast details have yet to be announced.
