Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner, Secrets and Lies) and Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax, Years and Years) are to star in The Sixth Commandment, a new BBC true-crime series about a shocking murder in an affluent English village.
As Deadline reports, Spall will play Peter Farquhar, a distinguished English novelist and schoolteacher who died of acute alcohol poisoning in October 2015. More than two years later, Farquhar's former partner Benjamin Field and a friend of his, Martyn Smith, were arrested in suspicion of murdering Farquhar.
Reid will play Ann Moore-Martin, Farquhar's neighbor, who entered into a relationship with Field after the novelist's death. Field and Smith were also arrested in suspicion of attempting to murder Moore-Martin, who was known for being devoutly religious.
Both Farquhar and Moore-Martin lived in the Buckinghamshire village of Maids Morton, which led to the crime being dubbed the "Maids Morton murder" in the British press. The BBC's drama based on what happened will also star Normal People actor Éanna Hardwicke, who will play Field, and Dame Sheila Hancock.
It was written by Sarah Phelps (The Witness for the Prosecution, The ABC Murders) will the full cooperation of Farquhar and Moore-Martin's families. Phelps said in a statement: "I wouldn’t have been able to write this without the help, support, and insights of Peter and Ann’s families. I’m so appreciative of the trust they placed in me to tell the stories of their loved ones.”
