Casting News: 'The Lord of the Rings' Prequel Series Adds 'Black Mirror' Actor Will Poulter

British rising star Will Poulter has joined the cast of Amazon's The Lord of the Rings prequel series.

According to Variety, Poulter, known for starring in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and this year's horror hit Midsommar, has landed a lead role in the series. However, the identity of Poulter's character is being kept under wraps.

Poulter, who also appeared in the Maze Runner movies and opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy in The Revenant, is only the second actor to join the ambitious-sounding series. Australian actress Markella Kavenagh (The Cry, Picnic at Hanging Rock), became the first cast member earlier this summer.

J.A. Bayona (Jurassic Park: The Fallen Kingdom, A Monster Calls) has signed up to direct several episodes of the series, which is being steered by showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Game of Thrones alum Bryan Cogman is also serving as an exec producer.

Very little else is known about the series, other than that it will introduce new storylines that take place ahead of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel The Fellowship of the Ring. It was reported back in November 2017 that Amazon had paid a massive $250 million for the global rights to the novel, and plans to make a sprawling series that spans multiple seasons and even a spin-off.

Oh, and Orlando Bloom, whose career breakthrough came when he played Legolas in Peter Jackson‘s The Lord of the Rings franchise, has recently ruled out a return to Middle-Earth in the new series.
