Casting News: 'The Favourite' Star Rachel Weisz is Considering Marvel's 'Black Widow'

Scarlett Johansson is set to reprise her role as Black Widow in the standalone film named after her character. And, who shall be joining her?

It was just recently confirmed that Stranger Things star David Harbour is officially on board, reports Variety. And Anglophenia favorite, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), is "circling" a key role.

Weisz was just nominated for a 2019 Oscar for her performance in The Favourite, which opens up her choices in roles (understatement).

This might be Weisz's first Marvel film, presuming it works out, but she's not new to the superhero genre, having starred in 2005's Constantine, based on the DC Comics series. Also, she's starred in action films like 1999's The Mummy, 2001's The Mummy Returns and 2012's The Bourne Legacy.

In other words: She's got this.

As well, we can look for Florence Pugh, who just recently starred in AMC's The Little Drummer Girl.

Those are the only four actors attached to the film at this point, with Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) set to direct. The plot line and specifics about the characters have yet to be announced.

Switching gears, here's what we do know:

Black Widow made her entrance into the MU in 1964, debuting in the issue "Tales of Suspense." We first saw her on the big screen in 2010's Iron Man 2. Since then, Johansson has reprised the role five times, making her rounds around the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring in 2012's The Avengers, 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, 2016's Captain America: Civil War and 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.

Johansson's already completed filming on Avengers: Endgame, which we can look for later this month on April 26.

Let's just say, Johansson has a corner on this market.

If you haven't seen Johansson in action, here she is as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow meeting Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) for the first time:

Hmmm, do you think Rachel Weisz should play a friend or foe of Black Widow!?
