The forthcoming Barbie movie is getting some major star power.
It was previously announced, Margot Robbie is set to take on the title role, starring in the live-action movie inspired by the Mattel doll.
Now, Barbie has found her Ken, with Ryan Gosling joining the cast, reports Deadline.
Barbie hit store shelves in 1959 with the Ken doll being introduced in 1961.
Barbie and her story are being brought to the big screen by Greta Gerwig. This isn't Gerwig's first time writing and directing a feature film, having helmed 2017's Lady Bird and 2019's Little Women.
Robbie is the one who announced Gerwig's involvement, talking to British Vogue about her upcoming role, saying: "Right, it comes with a lot of baggage! And a lot of nostalgic connections."
The storyline has yet to be revealed, but Robbie did hint at what to expect, saying, "But with that [baggage] come[s] a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ’Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
Robbie’s right, there are plenty of directions to go with this story, and we’re intrigued to see how it falls into place.
According to ComingSoon.net, production will begin in London early next year, with a release date predicted for 2023.
Robbie wasn’t the first actress to sign up for the role, with Amy Schumer originally attached and then Anne Hathaway stepping in.
Now that the cast has committed, presuming no one drops out, hopefully we’ll be seeing some movement.
