Casting News: Ray Winstone Joins Scarlett Johansson in Marvel's 'Black Widow'

Marvel's Black Widow movie just got even more badass with news that Ray Winstone has joined the cast.

The prolific British character actor, best known for his "hard man" roles in movies including Sexy Beast, The Departed, and Nil By Mouth, will flank star Scarlett Johansson, who is reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow from the Avengers movies.

Rising star Florence Pugh, who appeared in last year's acclaimed AMC miniseries The Little Drummer Girl, is also confirmed for the movie, as is Stranger Things actor David Harbour. Meanwhile, recent BAFTA winner Rachel Weisz has been linked to a "key role".

The long-awaited movie is shooting now in London, Variety reports, but plot details are being kept under wraps in the usual Marvel way.

Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome, Somersault) is directing from a script by Ned Benson (The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby) and Jac Schaeffer (Captain Marvel). Johansson, who first played Black Widow in 2010's Iron Man 2, is among the movie's producers.

In the meantime, Winstone will return to the big screen in the all-star adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, whose fantastic cast also includes Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, and Taylor Swift. Directed by Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), it arrives in theaters December 20.
