Parminder Nagra is to star in Maternal, a new British drama series about three female doctors returning to frontline medical work after maternity leave and the pandemic.
Lara Pulver (The Split) and Lisa McGrillis (Mum) will co-star in the six-part series, according to ITV.
Nagra will play Dr. Maryam Afridi, a senior Pediatrician who is said to be "full of doubt that she can cope with the emotional demands of treating children now that she has her own." In some ways, it's a full circle moment for the actress, who played Dr. Neela Rasgotra in longrunning U.S. medical drama ER from 2003-2009.
Pulver will play Catherine MacDiarmid, who is described as "a successful surgeon determined to be one of the boys in the macho world of surgery." Meanwhile, McGrillis will portray Dr. Helen Cavendish, a senior doctor who takes on a "mothering role" in the Acute Medicine department.
The series has been written by Jacqui Honess-Martin, who said in a statement: “I am thrilled to bring this funny, warm and quietly political story to ITV. It’s been humbling to have the opportunity to hear the stories of so many brave and brilliant female doctors working in the NHS over the past two years and I know the incredible team working on this show will do them proud.”
