Casting News: Oscar Isaac to Star in Revenge Thriller 'The Card Counter'

Oscar Isaac (Life Itself) has signed on for a new role, set to star in The Card Counter, reports Variety. If the title of the film makes you think of Blackjack, you are absolutely spot on. He plays a former serviceman who has a penchant for gambling.

Gambling can be a dangerous game, but it sounds like there is a bigger threat at hand. Isaac plays William Tell, who is approached by a young man named Cirk, seeking revenge on a mutual enemy. More often than not, in this sort of situation, the plan is, "Let's get him!!," but Tell seems to be reasonable and opts out.

Instead, he takes the young man on a road trip as a distraction. They travel from casino to casino, with the plan to compete in the World Series of Poker.

According to the description, Tell sees a chance at redemption by helping Cirk get past his grudge toward a former colonel.

That does make us wonder: redemption for what? The other question is: will the plan work?

Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) will write and direct. Schrader's more recent work includes 2017's First Reformed, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay.

You can also look for Isaac in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, in theaters on December 20, and in 2020's Dune remake as Duke Leto Atreides.
