Casting News: Olivia Colman to Star in Sam Mendes' Romantic Movie 'Empire of Light'
Two Oscar-winning Brits, Olivia Colman and Sir Sam Mendes, are teaming up for their first collaboration.
According to Variety, Colman is set to star in the director's latest movie, Empire of Light, which is aiming for a fall 2022 release.
Mendes has also written the screenplay for the film, which is said to be a love story centered around a "beautiful old cinema" in an English coastal town in the '80s. It's a very different-sounding project than Mendes' last film, the award-winning war epic 1917, but Mendes has said that Empire of Light is "very close to my heart."
Sir Roger Deakins, who won an Oscar for his cinematography work on 1917, has signed up to collaborate with Mendes again on the new movie.
Empire of Light adds to Colman's already packed slate of upcoming releases. She's also due to appear in the Maggie Gyllenhaal-directed movie The Lost Daughter, the drama film Mothering Sunday – which also stars her The Crown co-star Josh O'Connor – and the dark true-crime miniseries Landscapers.
And in the meantime, we'll see her at the Academy Awards on April 25, where she's nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Father.
