Mark Ruffalo (I Know This Much Is True) is set to join Emma Stone (Cruella) in the forthcoming movie Poor Things, reports Collider. It's an adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel by the same name, which is a reimagining of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein.
If we did the math right, it's an adaptation of an adaptation.
With that said, what is Poor Things about? Set during the Victoria Era, the story follows a young woman named Bella Baxter (Stone), who is brought back to life, but instead of having her own brain, she is given that of an infant's.
According to the film's description, Baxter drowns herself to escape her abusive husband. It turns out, Baxter was pregnant at the time, and a surgeon removes the brain from her fetus, placing it in her skull. Once revived, her brain begins to mature and she develops a conscience.
From there, she meets a lawyer, who takes her on adventures to Egypt, Greece and France. But, her travels are cut short when her husband, who she is still legally married to, recognizes her.
It hasn't been announced what role Ruffalo will play, but there are a number of dynamic characters in this story — a scientist, a husband, a lawyer — any one of these sounds quite engaging.
In addition to Ruffalo and Stone, there's talk of Willem Dafoe (The French Dispatch) joining the project.
Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) will be directing, based off a script he worked on with The Favourite writer Tony McNamara.
Ruffalo recently won a 2021 Golden Globe for his performance in the miniseries This Much I Know Is True:
