Casting News: Kristen Wiig is Heading to the Superhero Universe for 'Wonder Woman 2'
We noticed some chatter about Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) possibly signing on for a major role in the sequel to Wonder Woman. But, that's all it was as of last week.
And now, it's officially-official, with the writer-actress confirmed to star as the villain Cheetah.
Director Patty Jenkins made the announcement via Twitter today (March 9), and we can just feel her excitement booming off the page:

Wiig is one of our favorites, too. You may know the actress best from her run on Saturday Night Live, from 2004 to 2015, which saw her create unforgettable characters like the one-upper Penelope and amateur movie reviewer Aunt Linda. She also popped up in Judd Apatow's romantic comedy Knocked Up (2007) as a not-so-polite TV executive, opposite Katherine Heigl. And we spotted her playing a very serious zen yoga instructor in Jason Segel's Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008).
In 2011, Wiig co-wrote Bridesmaids with Annie Mumolo, also starring as the the underdog maid-of-honor to her childhood best friend (Maya Rudolph). Oh, and we can't leave out her contribution to one of our favorite franchises, Despicable Me. Wiig lent her vocals to Miss Hattle in the original (2010), then voiced Gru's love interest and super spy Lucy in the second (2013) and third (2017) films.
OK, so we know who Kristen Wiig is and greatly admire her body of work... but, are you familiar with the DC villain Cheetah?
If not, the folks over at DC Films have put together a side-by-side composite of the DC Comics illustration and Wiig:

One word comes to mind: Wowser!
Wonder Woman premiered in 2017, starring Gal Gadot in the title role. Robin Wright played the Amazon princess's mother, while Chris Pine took on the role of a possible love interest. If you missed it, you can take a peek at the trailer here and watch the entire film over at Amazon Video. Gadot is confirmed to return for the sequel (obvi), but, other than Wonder Woman and Cheetah, there are no other castings locked in.
Per usual, we're keen to find out more and will keep you updated as news emerges.
Wonder Woman 2 is in pre-production, set to premiere in 2019.
