It’s been a minute since seeing Jonathan Rhys Meyers in 2002’s Bend it Like Beckham. This time around, he’s going sci-fi, starring in the forthcoming feature film Wifelike, reports ComingSoon.net.
He’s set to portray a detective who's struggling with the loss of his wife. In an attempt to reassemble the life he once knew, he goes to an organization that specializes in AI (artificial intelligence). At first, things are going okay, but as they do in AI movies, his new companion develops an awareness.
The official description helps fill in the blanks: “A grieving detective in the near-future hunts down criminals who trade artificial humans on the black market. In the fight to end AI exploitation, an underground resistance attempts to infiltrate him by sabotaging the programming of the artificial human assigned as his companion to behave like his late wife. She begins to question her reality as memories of a past life begin to surface in a world where nothing is as it seems.”
If you missed it, here’s a peek at the first look trailer for Wifelike:

Wifelike is written and directed by James Bird and also stars Elena Kampouris.
It’s nice to see Meyers on-screen once again. He’s probably best known for projects like 2005’s Match Point and the period drama The Tudors (2007-2010). We also saw him in the TV series Dracula (2013-2014) and Vikings (2017-2019).
Wifelike is expected to premiere later this year.
It seems like Meyers is hard at work. Is this going to be his "comeback" role?
