Homeland actor Rupert Friend has joined fellow Brit Charlie Hunnam in Waldo, an upcoming movie based on the novel Last Looks by Howard Michael Gould.

Hunnam will star as a disgraced former LAPD detective who returns to his old crime-fighting life to solve the murder of a celebrity's wife. Friend's role in the film has yet to be confirmed.

Friend, who won an Emmy for portraying Peter Quinn on Homeland, joins a swelling cast that also includes Mel Gibson, The Lord of the Rings' Dominic Monaghan, Bright's Lucy Fry, Billions' Clancy Brown, and Friend's former Homeland co-star Morena Baccarin.

Tim Kirkby (Fleabag, Veep) is directing from a screenplay by original author Gould. Though the movie sounds like an action thriller, the novel it's based on, published last year, has strong comic elements. Gibson has been cast in a role with obvious comic potential - that of fictional actor Alaistar Pinch, a former Royal Shakespeare Company thesp who's now reduced to playing a two-dimensional Southern judge on a low-budget network show.

Waldo is expected to arrive in theaters in 2020. In the meantime, Friend can be seen in historical web series Strange Angel. He also has a role in Wes Anderson's next movie, The French Dispatch, in which he joins one of the director's typically impressive ensemble casts led by Frances McDormand, Kate Winslet, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Timothée Chalamet, and Saoirse Ronan.
