Casting News: 'Harry Potter' Actor David Thewlis Lands Lead in Scripted Series 'Barkskins'April 18, 2019
Attention Harry Potter fans! David Thewlis, the actor who played Remus Lupin in the wizarding film franchise, has landed the lead in a new National Geographic series.
Thewlis will star in Barkskins, a scripted series based on a 2016 novel by Annie Proulx, the best-selling author of Brokeback Mountain and The Shipping News.
Set in the 17th century in New France–the large areas of Canada and the U.S. colonized by France–Barkskins centers on a motley crew of outcasts trying to build a new life in the treacherous terrain of North America.
Deadline reports that Thewlis will play Monsieur Claude Trepagny, a rich landowner who has grand designs for the region.
British director David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Hard Candy) is directing with shooting due to start this year. Barkskins will air on National Geographic channels globally in 172 countries and 34 different languages.
It adds to something of a purple patch for Thewlis, who's recently been seen in the superhero movies Wonder Woman and Justice League. He also has roles in the upcoming Avatar sequels, and Eternal Beauty, a dark romantic movie set in Wales which co-stars Sally Hawkins and Dame Penelope Wilton.
And he's recently been cast opposite Toni Collette and Jessie Buckley, the break-out star of Wild Rose, in the upcoming project from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind's Charlie Kaufman.
Are you excited to see what Barkskins is like?
