Casting News: Gugu Mbatha-Raw Joins Tom Hiddleston in 'Loki' TV Series

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is the latest actor to be cast in Disney+'s eagerly-anticipated Loki series.

The BAFTA-nominated actress joins fellow Brits Tom Hiddleston – who is reprising his longtime M.C.U. role as Loki, Thor's wayward adoptive brother – and Sophia di Martino (Flowers, Yesterday) in the superhero series due in 2021. Owen Wilson also signed up for an unknown role earlier this month.

Mbatha-Raw's role in the series is being kept under wraps too, but Variety has confirmed that she's definitely been cast. Loki adds to a serious hot streak for the actress, who also has a main role in Apple TV+'s The Morning Show and co-starred in Edward Norton's acclaimed crime film, Motherless Brooklyn, which opened in November.

Next up is Misbehaviour, a biographical comedy-drama film about the events of the 1970 Miss World competition. Mbatha-Raw stars as Jennifer Hosten, Miss Grenada, who became the first woman of color to win the contest against a backdrop of protests and controversy. She stars opposite Keira Knightley, Jessie Buckley, Lesley Manville, and Downton Abbey's Phyllis Logan in that one.

Of course, Doctor Who fans will remember her breakout role as Tish Jones, sister of Freema Agyeman's Martha Jones, during the David Tennant era. Since then, her career has gone from strength to strength, and she was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth in 2017 for services to drama.
