Florence Pugh is set to star in a new limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden.
Deadline reports that Pugh will portray Cathy Ames, the manipulative antagonist at the heart of Steinbeck's classic family-based saga. It's another high-profile literary role for the British actress, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance as Amy March in 2019's Little Women.
Pugh will also produce the limited series, which has been picked up by Netflix. Interestingly, it's being written by actress-screenwriter Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather Elia Kazan directed the famous 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden starring James Dean
"I fell in love with East of Eden when I first read it, in my teens. Since then, adapting Steinbeck's novel – the great, sprawling, three-generational entirety of it – has been my dream," said Kazan. "More than anything, I have wanted to give full expression to the novel’s astonishing, singular antiheroine, Cathy Ames. Florence Pugh is our dream Cathy; I can't imagine a more thrilling actor to bring this character to life."
Pugh already has several other projects in the pipeline, including the new Christoper Nolan movie Oppenheimer, and Don't Worry Darling with Harry Styles, which is due in theaters this fall.
