Rising star Florence Pugh has signed on for a super-interesting new movie blending sci-fi with courtroom drama.

According to Deadline, the 25-year-old Oscar nominee is to take the lead in Dolly, a movie in which a robotic "companion doll" kills her owner then asks for an attorney so she can plead not guilty.

The movie is based on a short story of the same name by Elizabeth Bear and is being scripted by Vanessa Taylor (Hillbilly Elegy, The Shape of Water) and Drew Pearce (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Iron Man 3).

The project has been picked up by Apple Studios, but hasn't been given an official "green light" yet. It's still waiting on a finished script and the not-so-small matter of a director.

Still, it sounds like a potentially fascinating role for Pugh, who is riding high on last year's Oscar nomination for her breakout performance in Little Women.

She'll next be seen in Marvel's eagerly anticipated Black Widow movie, which is now due to arrive in theaters May 7 following a year-long delay due to Covid-19. She's also starring opposite Harry Styles in Don't Worry Darling, an upcoming psychological thriller movie that's Olivia Wilde's directorial follow-up to Booksmart.
