Casting News: Elizabeth Debicki to Play Princess Diana in Final Two Seasons of 'The Crown'

The Crown has cast another key role in its final two seasons: that of the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

Elizabeth Debicki, the Australian actress known for her roles in Widows, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Christopher Nolan's upcoming movie Tenet, and AMC's The Night Manager, will play the much-loved "people's Princess."

She said in a statement shared on Twitter: “Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”

Debicki will succeed Emma Corrin (Pennyworth, Grantchester), who is due to play Diana in season four of Peter Morgan's lavish drama series about the British Royal Family.

Debicki is the second new cast member announced for The Crown in the space of a week after Jonathan Pryce, who will succeed Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies as Prince PhilipImelda Staunton and Lesley Manville have previously been cast as Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret respectively. There's no word yet on who might play Prince Charles.

Born into a prominent British aristocratic family, Diana Frances Spencer married Charles, Prince of Wales in 1981 and raised two children with him: Prince William and Prince Harry. After she and Charles divorced in 1996, she lost the right to style herself as "Her Royal Highness," and was known simply as Diana, Princess of Wales.

She died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, prompting an unprecedented wave of global mourning and a tumultuous week for the British Royal Family which The Crown's creator Peter Morgan previously explored in his acclaimed film The Queen starring Dame Helen Mirren.

It's not known for certain if The Crown will also cover the death of the late Princess, though the BBC reports that the final two seasons of The Crown will eventually bring the British Royal Family into the 21st century. Season five is due to premiere in 2022, with season four due later this year.
