We know Jonathan Bailey for playing a high-ranking Viscount in Bridgerton. Now he's been cast as a Prince, Fiyero, in the Wicked movies.
After Variety reported that the Brit was "in talks" for the part, the movies' director Jon M. Chu went ahead and made it official. "I am too excited to pretend this hasn’t been happening. We have a Fiyero!!!!" he tweeted.
Bailey joins Ariana Grande and fellow Brit Cynthia Erivo in Chu's two-part adaptation of the hit stage musical based on The Wizard of Oz. The first movie is due in Christmas 2024 with the second scheduled for Christmas 2025.
Bailey is familiar from his TV roles in Bridgerton, W1A, and BBC America's Broadchurch, but he also has rock-solid musical theater chops. As a child actor, he put in a stint in the West End production of Les Misérables. He's since appeared in London productions of the American Psycho musical, The Last Five Years, and Company, winning a prestigious Olivier Award in 2019 for the latter.
We'll also see him soon in Fellow Travelers, an upcoming Showtime miniseries about two men who fall in love in the 1950s against the backdrop of the anti-communist McCarthyism era. He's co-starring opposite Matt Bomer in that one.
