Casting News: Benedict Cumberbatch to Play Poisoned Spy Alexander Litvinenko in 'Londongrad' Limited Series
Benedict Cumberbatch has lined up his latest TV project: Londongrad, a limited series about poisoned former KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko.
Cumberbatch will executive produce and star in the series, which is based on the book The Terminal Spy by Alan Powell, Variety reports. The limited series is in the works at HBO with David Scarpa (All the Money in the World) writing and Bryan Fogel (Jewtopia) set to direct.
Litvinenko, a former KGB agent who was granted asylum in the U.K. after he defected, was killed by polonium poisoning in London in 2006. His wife Marina later campaigned tirelessly to have those responsible for his murder brought to justice. The case eventually went to the European Court of Human Rights earlier this year.
Interestingly, another series about Litvinenko was announced in September. It’s in the works at U.K. network ITV with David Tennant starring and Lupin’s George Kay writing the screenplays.
And in the meantime, Cumberbatch fans can catch him in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, a biopic of Victorian artist Louis Wain that opened in select theaters last Friday (October 29).
