Casting News: Benedict Cumberbatch and Elisabeth Moss Join New Jane Campion FilmMay 7, 2019
Are you ready for some huge casting news? Benedict Cumberbatch and Elisabeth Moss have signed up to star in The Power of the Dog, the new film from Oscar-winning writer-director Jane Campion (The Piano, Top of the Lake).
Campion's script is adapted from Thomas Savage's 1967 novel The Power of the Dog, which centers on two very different brothers who co-own a lucrative Montana branch. When the sweeter-natured brother George secretly marries local widow Rose, his crueller brother Phil sets out for revenge by using her son Peter as a pawn.
Cumberbatch will get to tap into his dark side as Phil, while Moss will portray Rose. There's no word yet on who'll play George and Peter.
“The Power of the Dog is a sublime novel that deserves a life on the big screen. I couldn’t stop thinking about the story, it really haunted me. The themes of masculinity, nostalgia and betrayal are an intoxicating mix,” Campion told Variety.
“It’s also rare to find a story where the themes, the plot and the characters build tension as they reveal each other and even the end is satisfying and unexpected. It will be the first time I’ve worked with a male lead, which is exciting. Phil is a charismatic and complex character who declares war on his brother’s new wife and her teenage son.”
Pre-production isn't due to start on The Power of the Dog until the end of this year, so we'll presumably have to wait a little while to see it.
But in the meantime, we'll see Cumberbatch with Colin Firth and Richard Madden in Sam Mendes' upcoming war movie 1917, which is due in theaters December 25.
And of course, he's currently appearing in record-breaking superhero blockbuster Avengers: Endgame.
