Casting News: Austin Butler to Portray Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's BiopicJuly 16, 2019
Elvis Presley may have left the building... but he shall make his return in a big screen biopic, with Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!) at the helm. And who will take on the role of such a complicated man? Enter: Austin Butler (Arrow), reports Deadline.
The story will detail Presley's relationship with manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks. Parker helped shuffle Presley through fame, setting him up with a record deal with RCA, amongst other milestones, including getting him into acting.
There were a number of young actors vying for the role, including Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver), Miles Teller (Whiplash) and pop star-turned-actor Harry Styles (Dunkirk), with Butler winning the coveted spot.
Luhrmann, who will direct, said of his choice, "I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist."
Butler may be new to you, but not for too long, you can also look for him in the forthcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood — starring opposite A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie — coming out on July 26. He recently starred in the 2018 Broadway production of The Iceman Cometh, opposite Denzel Washington.
The script will be co-written by Luhrmann with his Moulin Rouge! writing partner Craig Pearce. The project is currently untitled.
Do you think it helps a biopic if viewers don't already know the lead actor??
