The cast of the fifth Indiana Jones movie just got even starrier with the addition of Antonio Banderas.
There's no word yet on who he's playing, but Deadline reports that the Oscar-nominated actor has "closed a deal" to join Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Mads Mikkelsen in the franchise's latest installment. It's the first Indiana Jones movie since 2008's Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Banderas is no stranger to a big action blockbuster, having previously starred in 1998's swashbuckling hit The Mask of Zorro and its 2005 sequel The Legend of Zorro. He recently played the main villain in the action comedy movie Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard.
James Mangold (Logan, Walk the Line) is directing the new Indiana Jones movie with Steven Spielberg on board as a producer. The movie started shooting in the U.K. in June and the cast have been spotted filming in various locations including the North Yorkshire Moors, Glasgow, and the Scottish village of Glenroe.
Waller-Bridge and Mikkelsen's roles in the movie are being kept tightly under wraps, but let's hope the Fleabag creator and Killing Eve executive producer gets a few opportunities to show off her crisp comic timing. The movie is scheduled for release on July 29, 2022 so we still have a little while to wait.
What sort of character do you think Antonio Banderas will be playing in Indiana Jones 5?
