Carey Mulligan Dedicates Her Independent Spirit Award to Helen McCrory

Carey Mulligan paid tribute to Helen McCrory at last night's Independent Spirit Awards by dedicating her Best Female Lead win to the late actress.

Mulligan won her Spirit Award for her performance in Promising Young Woman, the dark comedy-drama movie written and directed by Killing Eve's season two showrunner Emerald Fennell.

Mulligan said during her virtual acceptance speech: "She was a true independent spirit and actress that I have looked up to, and will continue to look up to for the rest of my career, Helen McCrory, so thank you to her for everything she gave us."

McCrory passed away last Friday (April 16) following a battle with cancer. She was 52 years old.

Other winners at the Independent Spirit Awards, which were shown live on AMC+ Thursday night, included Riz Ahmed, who won Best Male Lead for his performance in Sound of Metal. Nomadland's Chloé Zhao was named Best Director and the film itself won Best Feature.

Fennell took home the Best Screenplay prize for Promising Young Woman. For the first time, the Independent Spirit Awards also bestowed TV prizes, with Michaela Coel's I May Destroy You being named Best New Scripted Series.

Mulligan, Ahmed, and Fennell are also in contention for the Academy Awards, which take place Sunday (April 25).
