We last saw Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell on-screen together in 2008’s In Bruges, written and directed by Martin McDonagh. Gleeson and Farrell are back at it again, starring in The Banshees of Inisherin, also written and directed by McDonagh, reports Empire.
The story is set in 1923 Ireland. It’s a pretty simple premise, but it does get more complicated as the movie rolls out. Gleeson and Farrell play lifelong friends named Colm and Pádraic. Colm wakes up one day and wants nothing to do with Pádraic. Pádraic tries to get to the source of the problem with Colm simply replying, “I just don’t like you no more.”
Yikes, that must be hard to hear. While Pádraic does hear it, he doesn’t accept it. He tries and tries to gain his former friend’s validation. The more he tries, the more Colm pushes him away.
Colm becomes so aggravated he threatens to cut off a finger each time Pádraic comes to him (yikes, again).
The trailer helps fill in the blanks:

Colm seeks counsel from a priest, asking him if what he’s doing is a sin. The priest replies, “No, but it’s not very nice either, is it?” Even so, Colm doesn’t change his ways, he’d rather just “call it quits.”
For anyone with abandonment issues, this may not be the movie for you. But, for anyone with abandonment issues, this may be the movie for you, as we don’t yet know what the outcome is.
The Banshees of Inisherin had its world premiere over the weekend at Venice Film Festival, receiving a 15-minute standing ovation.
You can look for the theatrical release on October 21.
This marks McDonagh’s follow-up to 2017’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Are you excited to see these three collaborating together once again?
