BAFTA TV Awards to Go Ahead Virtually with Richard Ayoade as Host
Today brings great news for fans of British TV: this year's BAFTA TV Awards are going ahead after all, only virtually.
The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade will host the first ever virtual BAFTA TV Awards on July 31 after coronavirus prevented the annual ceremony from taking place as planned on May 17. The virtual awards ceremony be will be broadcast "as live" on BBC One in the U.K., the British Academy has confirmed.
A fortnight earlier, Episodes' Stephen Mangan will host the British Academy Television Craft Awards on July 17. This ceremony will also be broadcast "as live," but through the British Academy's social channels.
Nominations for both awards ceremonies will be announced Thursday, June 4. Ayoade said drolly in a statement: “I am as surprised as you are that this is still going ahead.”
Mangan added: “I’m absolutely delighted to be hosting the BAFTA Craft Awards again - handing out our industry’s highest accolades to the people who make this country’s television world-leading. The format might have to change a little this year but nothing will stop me putting on black tie and celebrating their success.”
Last year's BAFTA TV Awards saw BBC America's Killing Eve sweep the board with wins in three key categories: Best Drama Series, Best Actress for Jodie Comer, and Best Supporting Actress for Fiona Shaw. Co-stars Sandra Oh and Kim Bodnia were also nominated.
