7 Times Daniel Radcliffe Really Showed His Range

One thing we love about Daniel Radcliffe is his willingness to take on a challenging and/or very quirky role. In Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, out Friday (November 4) on The Roku Channel, he portrays "Weird Al" Yankovic, who has been giving us hilarious pop parodies from the 1970s to the present day.
To get ready for Radcliffe's latest unexpected performance, here's a reminder of seven other times he really demonstrated his range.
1. Extras (2006)
Midway through his Harry Potter stint, Radcliffe gamely sent himself up in an episode of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's hit sitcom Extras. He plays a (very) exaggerated version of himself who tries a little too hard to prove he's a grown-up capable of chatting up his female co-stars. His scenes with Dame Diana Rigg are especially juicy.

2. Kill Your Darlings (2013)
This biographical movie shines a spotlight on the early years of the influential Beat Generation writers. Radcliffe gives an impressive performance as the young Allen Ginsberg, a wide-eyed freshman who's introduced to anti-establishment views by fellow student Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan). It's a fascinating watch, but ultimately a rather dark one, too.

3. Horns (2014)
This movie's title isn't misleading: Radcliffe plays a 26-year-old man, Ig Perrish, who wakes up after a drunken night out with two horns protruding from his head. They're not just decorative, either, as Ig soon discovers the horns give him the power to coax people's darkest secrets from them. It's an unusual, strangely moving role that Radcliffe fully commits to.

4. Now You See Me 2 (2016)
Radcliffe is cast against type as the main villain in this hit heist movie. He plays Walter Mabry, an arrogant tech tycoon who hires our heroes, the Four Horsemen illusionist crew, to steal an incredibly important data chip. It's a somewhat tongue-in-cheek role that Radcliffe is clearly having lots of fun with.

5. Swiss Army Man (2016)
This is the movie in which Radcliffe plays, famously, a farting corpse. That's how the story begins, anyway, before Radcliffe's character Manny comes back to life and bonds with Hank (Paul Dano), a man marooned on a desert island. This movie is not only unique but a little freaky.

6. Miracle Workers (2019)
This offbeat anthology series gives Radcliffe plenty of opportunities to show off his comedy chops. Across the three seasons to date, he's played a low-ranking angel, a medieval prince, and a 19th-century preacher, co-starring opposite Steve Buscemi each time. The upcoming fourth season has an apocalyptic theme, so it's bound to be another wild ride.

7. Escape from Pretoria (2020)
This gripping film is based on a real-life jail escape by three South African political prisoners. Radcliffe plays Tim Jenkin, an anti-apartheid activist who hits on an ingenious plan to steal wood from the prison store so he can make keys to fit the cell locks. It's intense stuff featuring fine performances from Radcliffe and his co-stars Daniel Webber and Ian Hart.
