7 Hilarious and Memorable Moments from 'The Graham Norton Show'

Did you know The Graham Norton Show has a new timeslot? It now premieres Sundays at 11pm EST on BBC America. But of course, the show still has the same mix of A-list guests, Big Red Chair anecdotes, and general hilarity, so we're taking a look back at seven classic moments from episodes past.

1. The time Ian McKellen did his Maggie Smith impression.

The legendary actor has been a guest on The Graham Norton Show no fewer than seven times, and he's always a slightly naughty delight. During a visit in 2017, he recalled the time he bumped into Maggie Smith at the Oscars, and received a very tart one-liner from his fellow thesp. Warning: after watching this clip, his Maggie impression will probably live rent-free in your mind.

2. The time Lady Gaga met June Brown.

One of the great things about The Graham Norton Show is the eclectic blend of guests. Back in 2013, pop superstar Lady Gaga made her first appearance on the show and bonded with June Brown, the then-86-year-old star of BBC soap opera EastEnders. Brown brought so much campy fun to the show that clips from her appearance were widely shared on Twitter when she passed away last year.

3. The time Dawn French shared a very embarrassing moment.

It's always a pleasure when Dawn French pays a visit to The Graham Norton Show — after all, she's a British national treasure who's never short of a story or two. When she swung by last year, she wasn't afraid to recall the time she said something pretty risqué in front of then-Prince (and now King) Charles. We'd love to have been a fly on the wall during their encounter.

4. The time Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret popped in.

Well, the fab actresses who played them in The Crown, anyways – namely, Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter. Colman was her usual hilariously self-deprecating self, while Bonham Carter shared a remarkable story about contacting Princess Margaret through a medium. This episode also feels very poignant because it features a charming appearance from the late, great Chadwick Boseman.

5. The time George Takei explained his catchphrase.

The Star Trek icon paid a visit to the red sofa just last month and you can watch the full episode here. It was a thoroughly charming appearance, just as you'd expect, in which he shared the story of how he became associated with the expression "oh my!" Once you've heard George Takei say the word "dong," you won't forget it in a hurry.

6. The time Benedict Cumberbatch revealed he can't say the word "penguin."

Cumberbatch is another The Graham Norton Show regular with seven visits to the red sofa... so far. Back in 2014, he and Miranda Hart appeared on the same episode and became really quite uproarious, especially when Cumberbatch revealed that his crisp actors' enunciation has a very random weak spot.

7. Every time Miriam Margolyes was, well, Miriam Margolyes.

If there was an award for The Graham Norton Show's most outrageous guest, it would surely go to Miriam Margolyes, who says exactly what she thinks every time she swings by. She's been a guest on eight occasions over the years, but we particularly love this clip from 2014, when she told Dominic Cooper precisely what she thought of Mamma Mia! Ouch.

The Graham Norton Show continues Sunday, January 22 at 11pm EST on BBC America. This week's guests are double Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, actor and producer Margot Robbie, singer and West End star Beverley Knight, top comic Alan Carr, and singer-songwriter RAYE.
