Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson play rival con-artists in The Hustle, releasing today (May 10). They may not be fast friends, but on first meeting they already have one thing in common: they both like money. If The Hustle follows suit of its predecessor, 1988's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, these two will become lifelong allies.

Let's take a peek at five other flicks where budding relationships could have gone either way:

1. Beaches

1988's Beaches revolves around two little girls who become friends by accident. C.C. Bloom is a child performer, tap dancing her way into people's hearts. She finds Hillary, who is visiting from San Francisco, lost under the boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ. It could have been a friendship of convenience, but the two stay in touch as pen pals. They meet up again as adults when Hilary runs away from her life of privilege and joins C.C. in NYC. Later in life, Hillary asks C.C. a favor that goes beyond all favors, one only a true friend could see through. Young C.C. is played by The Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik, with Bette Midler stepping in to portray the adult version. Barbara Hershey plays C.C.'s bestie, Hillary.

2. The Craft

In 1996's The Craft, Bonnie (Neve Campbell), Sarah (Robin Tunney), Nancy (Fairuza Balk) and Rochelle (Rachel True), are friends of circumstance, with them all being outsiders. Ridiculed at school, berated by peers, ignored by love interests, the girls ban together, creating an unbreakable bond. It's not one held tight by a friendship bracelet, but a supernatural spell giving them each their own individual power. The girls get their confidence up, take over the run of the school, even taking revenge on their tormentors, but like any social group there can be only one Queen B. These girls were drawn together for a reason, creating a coven, but being a witch might supersede being a friend.

3. The Princess Diaries

In Hathaway's debut film, 2001's The Princess Diaries, she portrays a typical American teenage girl named Mia. Lilly (Heather Matarazzo) is her best friend, actually, her only friend. Mia's life is turned upside down when she learns she is... a princess, heir to the throne of Genovia. She finds this out at 16 because her parents had split, and her mother never revealed the true identity of her father. Prior to this turn of events, she and Lilly are practically attached at the hip. Lilly helps Mia deal with this news and the responsibilities that come with the title. But her loyalty is tested when Mia's ego outgrows her tiara.

4. Mean Girls

In 2004's Mean Girls, Lindsay Lohan plays Cady Heron, the new girl in school. She thinks she finds a friend in Regina George (Rachel McAdams), but it's soon revealed Regina has a hidden agenda. Janis (Lizzy Caplan), the school's resident misfit, adopts Cady as a sort of pet, taking her under her wing. But, it turns out Janis and Regina were junior high best friends and are now ultimate enemies (not even frenemies). It seems Janis is using Cady to get revenge on Regina. It's hard to keep track of who is friends with whom which is kind of the theme of the movie, written by funny lady and also starring Tina Fey. Fey takes on the role of one of the teachers, and she helps break down barriers. This group may not result in lifelong friendships, but at the least they make up and end the school year on a high note.

5. Bridesmaids

2011's Bridesmaids is made up of an ensemble cast led by Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. The two play lifelong friends, Annie and Lillian. When Lillian gets engaged to be married, she asks Annie to be her maid of honor. The request sends Annie into a little bit of a "What am I doing with my life?" spiral. To make things even more troubling, she finds herself battling with one of Lillian's bridesmaids, Helen (Rose Byrne), throughout the wedding planning. When Lillian goes missing the day of the wedding, the two join forces to find the bride-to-be. Sometimes a foe is actually a friend, there's just a bunch of nonsense getting in the way, making it hard to see what's there.
