2019 Spring Movie Preview: Life After 'Avengers: Endgame'
There's alway a lot of chatter about the summer blockbusters heading to theaters, but we're still making our way through spring. Fans have been waiting with bated breath for Marvel's Avengers: Endgame to come out, and now that it's in theaters, we can all breathe a little easier (<--slight sarcasm). And, we'd like to point out, there are more movies out there — like Pet Sematary, Red Joan and Under the Silver Lake... just to name a few — and here's a list highlighting what's to come in the next few months:
1. UglyDolls (May 3)

What happens to dolls with imperfections? UglyDolls follows the story of such a doll, Moxy (Kelly Clarkson), who is sent to Uglyville with others like her. But, she doesn't resign to this being her fate. Moxy fights to be matched up with a child, who she can bring happiness to, ultimately being loved back. The computer-animated musical comedy seems like a mix of Toy Story and Trolls, with a bit more edge.
2. The Hustle (May 10)

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star in The Hustle, which is based off of 1988's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (which that is based off of 1964's Bedtime Story). This time around, the ladies are giving “dirty rotten men” a run for their money, according to the movie’s tagline. Both women play con-artists, one's posh... the other, not so much.
3. Tolkien (May 10)

The new biopic Tolkien, with Nicholas Hoult in the title role, starts off with the author's early years growing up an orphan and takes us through his days at Oxford, fighting in World War I, and, of course, will include how he came to write his acclaimed novels. In Tolkien we see the start of what will ultimately become Middle-earth and all its wonderful inhabitants.
4. John Wick: Chapter 3 (May 17)

Keanu Reeves is back as hitman John Wick and he's ready for the third chapter. We can also look for Ian McShane to reprise his role as Winston, the owner of the Continental Hotel, a sanctuary for hired killers. In Chapter 3, Wick has been hired to procure a diamond sample. His employers seem to be more than upset with him when he returns empty-handed.
5. The Souvenir (May 17)
The Souvenir stars real-life mother and daughter, Tilda Swinton and Honor Swinton Byrne, as on-screen mother and daughter. Byrne plays a young woman living in 1980s England, who has grown up privileged, but craves a life free of the "golden handcuffs." Tom Burke plays her love interest, a man 15 years her senior, who is ushering her through an intellectual awakening.
6. Aladdin (May 24)

Will Smith will make his debut as the new, blue Genie in Disney's live-action musical Aladdin this spring. While there has been some pushback from fans, we suspect intrigue will get the better of most, wanting to see the entire story from start to finish. Aladdin follows the same premise as the 1992 animated original: a young man living on the streets (Mena Massoud) comes across a magic lamp, releasing a genie, who grants him three wishes. Aladdin uses his wishes to woo Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott).
7. Dark Phoenix (June 7)

X-Men‘s Jean Grey is getting an entire film dedicated to her, named after her alter-ego Dark Phoenix. Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner returns to reprise the title role, first seen in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse. The new movie gives us an immersive look at her backstory. Jean learned of her powers as a small child, simultaneously realizing she did not have control of them. Now grown, it appears she still needs some reigning in.
8. Men in Black: International (June 14)

Thor co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are taking over for the OG alien-hunting agents, originally played by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, in the next installment of the Men in Black franchise, MIB: International. While there’s been some reshuffling, it’s not all new, with the return of Emma Thompson as Agent O, Chief of the MIB. Typically the immediate threat is extraterrestrial, but this time it's a... mole.
9. Wild Rose (June 14)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_Ths6k7qXk
In Wild Rose, an aspiring musician from Glasgow, Scotland, heads to Nashville, TN, to become a country singer. Taboo actress Jessie Buckley takes on the role of Rose-Lynn Harlan. Rose throws caution to the wind, pursuing her American dream with no abandonment, but in the whirlwind of it all, her two small children are left behind with their grand-mum (Julie Waters). We can also look for Doctor Who's Sophie Okonedo as a friend and confidant.
10. Toy Story 4 (June 21)

And, finally, the next installment of Toy Story hits theaters on the last day of spring (June 21). We last saw Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and friends in 2010. Now... they have new friends, like Forky (Tony Hale). The story revolves around this craft made of a fork and pipe cleaners, who really doesn't feel like he fits in with the more traditional toys. He's on a journey to find his place.
