10 Reasons We Can't Get Enough of Domhnall Gleeson

Domhnall Gleeson and his younger brother Brian have come up with a new series, Frank of Ireland, both writing and starring in it. We're all about the killer-thrillers and dramas, but it you're looking for a break from the doom and gloom, this comedy might be the fix.

The Gleeson brothers star as best-friends Frank and Doofus, and both are in arrested development. While the thirty-somethings are content in their ways, those around them aren't so much, finding them to be a nuisance. We were able to binge through this easily digestible six-part series in two sittings — which you can catch over at Amazon Prime — and LOLd the whole way.

It also left us wanting to look into the elder Gleeson a bit more, and round up a few of his most endearing qualities:

1. He's just adorable.

Yes, Gleeson is one tall drink of water, but we're not referring to just his looks when calling him adorbs. It's more so his presence and how he carries himself — he just has this way about him that makes one smile. And, it's not just us, SyFy Wire refers to him as "awkwardly hot."

His role in 2013's About Time is a good example of where he puts his unassuming charm to use while looking for love. When he meets the girl of his dreams for the first time, and it doesn't go so well, he calls on time-travel for a do-over... until he gets it right.

2. He's talented.

Gleeson has tackled a number of roles, all varying, showing his range as an actor. He was perhaps first known for his performances in the Harry Potter franchise (2010-2014) as Bill Weasley, Ron's eldest brother. He then stepped into the 2012 period drama Anna Karenina as Konstantin Levin, an aristocratic landowner. In 2014, we saw him in one of our favorite genres, sci-fi, taking the lead in Ex Machina, as a young man who visits the home of a female AI.

And, how does one follow-up such an already established CV? Oh, with a little-known franchise called Star Wars, where he takes on the role of baddie General Hux in the sequel trilogy (2015-2019).

3. He's sensible.

Speaking of General Hux, Gleeson swung by The Late Late Show with James Corden to talk about the character, which we first saw in 2015's Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. Corden asked Gleeson if he liked playing General Hux, with the actor saying, "I feel like I get the best version of it, because I'm not front and center. So I feel like my life can be a little bit more... ordinary... as a result. So, that's all nice."

He also goes on to say that Hux isn't super popular with fans, which could be both good or bad. But, he takes it in stride.

4. He has good taste.

He's not only good on-screen, but he's also good at choosing his roles. In addition to the aforementioned movies, we had so much fun watching him in 2018's Peter Rabbit and 2021's Peter Rabbit 2, based on the 1902 children's story The Tale of Peter Rabbit. He portrays a young man who inherits an estate, that pretty much is run by Peter Rabbit, his three sisters and their friends. The critters were there first and it becomes a battle of wills.

Gleeson talked about what it was like doing a half live-action and half animated movie, saying on the red carpet of the premiere, "It was very challenging at times, having a fight with something that's not there is difficult to do. Tricky at times."

5. He's beyond funny.

Both the Gleeson brothers had a virtual check-in with Seth Myers to chat about Frank of Ireland. The interview starts off with them talking shop, going over the different acting techniques. But, when Myers starts to tease the guys, Domhnall teases right back, saying, "We saw you trying to pronounce our names. We saw you trying to pronounce our names before the show started. You went through Domhnall four times. You hadn't changed the name on the card. They'll edit all this out. And then by the end of it, you finally got it right..."

Well, we think he's teasing!? He really went for it. If you're still not clear on how to pronounce his name, here you go:

6. He doesn't overthink things.

In 2020, we saw Gleeson opposite Merritt Weaver (Nurse Jackie) in the TV series Run. The two play ex-lovers who agree to meet-up and run away together. When asked by The Irish Times about the pairing, Gleeson shared his thoughts about working with someone new, saying, "It’s a funny thing when people talk about chemistry and worrying about it. I’ve never thought, Oh, s**t, I wonder if I’ll have good chemistry with x person."

That seems like a healthy mindset to have, making him easy to work with.

7. He's a romantic.

Gleeson seems to have a penchant for portraying characters looking for love, like in 2015's Brooklyn, but he also likes to keep his private life... well, private. In an interview with The Washington Post he explained his reasoning, saying, "I find it strange that people want to know about those aspects of my life. And then I also find it odd that I’m quite so defensive about it,” he said. “I think I hate the notion of anybody being defined by anybody else, and that seems to be what happens when anybody who happens to be in the public eye goes out with anybody else. Some things are precious. Why on earth would you share them?"

We 100 percent agree and will respect his wishes.

9. He's cool under pressure.

Gleeson got on the phone with RTÉ Radio 1 for a catch-up, talking about his role in Star Wars and The Revenant. And, at the same time, he was traveling to the airport via taxi. At the 13:50 mark in the above interview, his taxi gets into a crash, where we hear Gleeson say, "Ooh. We just crashed. We're in London. Speeding. No, no, not speeding, going at a reasonable rate. I don't want to get this guy in trouble. Excellent driver!"

And, what happened next? He carried on with the interview!

8. He's open-minded.

Speaking of 2015's The Revenant, Gleeson took part in a panel with the Los Angeles Times' The Envelope series. When asked if he knew what he was getting into for this film, he simply responded, "No." He went on to say director Alejandro G. Iñárritu tried to explain what to expect, in regards to the physical endurance that would be called on during filming, but it didn't quite sink in. Even so, he went into the project fully ready to give it his go.

We appreciate his being so forthcoming with his answer.

10. He gives credit where due.

Gleeson was keen to collaborate with his brother on Frank of Ireland, with Brian (Peaky Blinders) taking on the title role. While the elder Gleeson may be slightly more well-known, he goes out of his way in this interview with People magazine to be sure his little brother is recognized, saying, "Seeing it come to life in a way that I wasn't expecting, in an even better way than I had imagined and seeing [Brian's] imagination and skill up play, that was a really amazing thing to see as a brother and a friend."

Aw, brotherly love, that's just too sweet.

Are you going to have a Gleeson brothers marathon this weekend? We are!
