Jim Broadbent is set to star in the forthcoming Sundance Now series Ten Percent, which is a remake of the French series Call My Agent! You can look for the premiere in the U.S. and U.K. on April 28.

Whenever we see Broadbent, we think, “He is just delightful.” We could start and finish this list with just that, but we will expand.
Here are 10 reasons we keep going back to Broadbent:
1. He has such a nice temperament.

Broadbent just has a way about him. He has a genial demeanor and is very welcoming, on-screen and off. He’s portrayed a number of roles, some friendly, some not so much, but even so, he tackles both with care, like in his stage performance of A Christmas Carol as Ebenezer Scrooge.
2. He has a great approach to work.

When talking about 2020’s The Duke, he said, “We take the job seriously, but we take humor during the creative process. We looked for humor in history. If it makes you laugh then it’s true, in a way. If you laugh it means that we have reached the heart of the matter.
3. He is grounded.

He went into acting with a healthy outlook, saying to The Guardian, “I gave myself until I was 30 and if it wasn’t working, I’d chuck it in. Here I am, 40 years later, so something must have gone right.” He went on to discuss the possibility of retiring, giving his perspective on the sentiment: “I don’t think that happens. You either stop getting offers or find you can’t do it any more. I’ve become increasingly picky about things I do. Maybe I’ll choose my way into retirement [laughs].
4. He’s open-minded.

When first starting off, Broadbent saw himself as a character actor. He talked about this in an interview with The New York Times, saying, “I was never going to be the regular sort of good-looking, handsome chap. From the word go, since I wasn’t easily castable in any particular thing, I knew I had to cast my net very wide.”
5. He’s humble.

In an interview with The Guardian, he was asked which of his films were his favorite, with him saying,The DukeTopsy-TurvyIris and Moulin Rouge. Those last two came out the same year and I think that’s why I got an Oscar. People realized that one of them must have been acting.” He clearly downplays his performance in 2001’s Iris, for which he won Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards.
6. He’s very honest.

Broadbent swung by The Graham Norton Show for a chat. He told a cheeky story about auditioning for 2001’s Moulin Rouge. Director Baz Luhrmann asked him if he could dance and asked him if he could sing, with Broadbent answering, “no, no.” But, even so, they were able to work around it.
7. He has done a TON of work.

Broadbent has become a household name and recognizable face, but you may not realize he’s completed over 100 films. We can’t list all of them here, but some that stand out to us most, include 2001’s Bridget Jones’s Diary, 2002’s Gangs of New York, 2007’s Hot Fuzz, 2009’s The Young Victoria, 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, 2014’s Paddington, and 2020’s The Duke.

Not to mention, his early days, starring in TV series like Blackadder (1983) and Only Fools and Horses (1983-1991).

8. He’s committed to his craft.

Broadbent’s determination has resulted in a successful career. He talks about how he achieved this, saying to the Radio Times, “I’ve been fairly selfish myself with my career and putting myself out there. I’ve been obsessed with acting to the exclusion of other people’s interests. I must have been extremely frustrating to my wife an awful lot.” He and his wife have been married for over thirty years, with him pointing out, “Yes, she knew what she was in for!”
9. He’s appreciative.

In 2002, Broadbent was honored with an OBE, but he declined the offer. In a recent interview with The Independent, he explained his reasoning, saying, “We get treated well all the time. Actors who get these awards have all won lots of treats along the way doing what they love doing – they don’t need more presents.”
10. He’s respectful.

As mentioned earlier, Broadbent stars in The Duke, which revolves around a pensioner who steals a portrait from The National Gallery. After completing the film, Broadbent made a visit to the art museum to view the actual painting. He was absolutely thrilled and in awe, which you can see in the above clip.
