Benedict Cumberbatch is set to return as the surgeon-turned-superhero in the forthcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. His reprising of the role isn’t surprising at all, as it's a crowd-pleaser, but his character has gone through some changes.
This new version of Doctor Strange is predictably unpredictable:
Cumberbatch as a person and actor does the same, always catching us off guard.
Here are 10 times we were utterly impressed by him:
1. He embraces his otterness.
When Cumberbatch first got the world’s attention, fans noticed his resemblance to an aquatic animal. An otter to be exact. Some people wouldn’t necessarily take that as a compliment, but Cumberbatch took it in stride. Not only that, he acted out poses for Graham Norton to reinforce the fan theory.
2. He can’t say the word “penguin.”
While Cumberbatch is a very skilled and talented actor, he struggles with the word 'penguin,' which delighted fans. He narrated a nature documentary, and throughout, he mispronounced the word. He cheekily points out that no one corrected him while recording. It just makes him all the more endearing.
3. He’s serious about his craft.
In addition to being skilled and talented, he's also passionate. Following a stage performance of Macbeth, he addressed the crowd, pleading with audiences not to use cell phones during live performances. He was very polite about it, explaining it’s a huge distraction. Annnd scene. He got his point across.
4. He showed up at a comic book store unannounced.
Cumberbatch doesn’t just enjoy portraying a superhero, he likes walking around town in character. We wouldn’t call this method acting. It really just falls under the element of surprise. He turned up to a comic book store as Doctor Strange. It’s not clear who enjoyed it more, him or the staffers?
5. He is beyond humble.
He was honored as British Artist of the Year at the Britannia Awards. And, what did he do? He thanked everyone around him. The writers and directors he works with and even his colleague on stage with him, Chiwetel Ejiofor. His entire speech was dedicated to others, including his parents.
6. He’s very playful.
When walking the red carpet at the 2014 Academy Awards, Cumberbatch’s instincts kicked in. The band U2 was posing for a photo, with Cumberbatch jumping into the air right behind them. The moment was caught by the camera. A friend had asked him to get a photo with U2 and this is how he went about it.
7. He’s great at improv.
When on The Graham Norton Show he was asked to give his best pick up line. Again, this falls under playful, with him delivering a sort of Real Housewives tagline, “Hi, I’m Benedict, but you can call me Big Ben. If you’re feeling strange, the doctor will see you now.” He even threw a plug in there.
8. He gets nervous.
Everyone gets nervous, but not everyone shows it. Cumberbatch let his guard down and expressed how amazed he was when being honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. He grabbed his phone to rely on notes, saying, “This is possibly the most surreal thing that has ever happened to me.”
9. He likes change.
Cumberbatch had a sit down with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, talking about how he got his start and what he's learned along the way. He recapped a conversation with Meryl Streep, when he asked her what her foundation was. And her saying to him, “It always changes.” It was an a-ha moment for him, thinking to himself, “Oh, thank God!”
10. He’s good at being a human.
Cumberbatch is always keeping busy, but not too busy to help others. He’s offered to open his home to Ukrainian refugees. In an interview with Sky News, he provided an update, saying, “They’ve made it out of Ukraine. I’m monitoring their progress every day.” He kept if brief, to respect their privacy.
