10 On-Screen Supernatural Romances That Were Deemed to Be Doomed
The story of two people from different worlds getting together romantically isn't a new one — like Romeo and Juliet or West Side Story — but when you throw in supernatural elements, it sure is a tricky one.
And that's exactly what we're getting with BBC America's A Discovery of Witches, except not people per se... in this case, a vampire and a witch. In the eight-part series, starring Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer, they both know it's forbidden for their kind to intermix. But, they do so, anyhow.
New episodes of A Discovery of Witches air Sundays at 9/8c on BBC America.
Here are ten other TV couplings in unlikely relationships, pushing the boundaries of the supernatural:
1. Beauty and the Beast

In 1987, Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman brought their version of the fairytale Beauty and the Beast to the mean streets of NYC. In this 20th century installment, Hamilton plays a career-driven attorney, with Perlman playing a lion-like beast, who lives beneath the streets away from onlookers. When he comes to her aid unexpectedly, she sees past his exterior, and starts to fall for him. We kind of know how this story ends, but it's always fun to see a different take on it.
2. Xena: Warrior Princess

Xena (Lucy Lawless), a goddess, doesn't have a great track record with men, with most of her former lovers having been killed off for some reason or another. Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) lands on the list of love interests, but we should point out he is immortal, explaining his survival rate. But, there is one person, who is always by her side, Gabrielle (Renée O'Connor). While the two may not be "official," Gabrielle is Xena's main hang, and in a way a life partner. It's believed that their relationship does have a deep intimacy, going beyond that of a platonic friendship. Xena is a warrior princess... she can couple up with anyone she wants, at least in our book.
3. Charmed

The original Charmed, which aired from 1998-2006, revolved around three witches (Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs), who are sisters... and are good. The Charmed Ones use their powers to fight evil. They aren't in it all alone and have a Whitelighter to help them, by the name of Leo (Brian Krause). Leo looks after the witches, but has a soft spot for Piper, the middle sister. The two hit it off so well, that they eventually marry and have a child, who inherits his parents' magical abilities making him Twice-Blessed.
4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) was destined to be a vampire slayer but really would have rather enjoyed her popularity at Sunnydale High. Even so, Buffy rose to the occasion in the 1990’s cult classic, not wanting her friends and community to perish. While her planner was full, she did find time for dating. Some high school girls prefer college men, but not Buffy... she went for the vampire Angel (David Boreanaz). The irony is not lost on us.
5. Being Human
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6CvWpoeMLQ
Creator Toby Whithouse‘s series (2008-2013) followed supernaturals doing their best to continue being human, hence the name of the series. We find a ghost, a vampire, and a werewolf, all living together in one flat, trying to hold onto normalcy in spite of their “afflictions.”
Aidan (Sam Witwer), a vampire, and Sally (Meaghan Rath), a ghost, start off as friends but then find themselves having stronger feelings. In an alternative universe they do end up getting wrapped up in romantic relationship. But, back in the normal timeline, Aidan has no memory of this. Sally works to help him remember.
6. True Blood
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W261uHRCFQs
Unlike a lot of vampire stories, in True Blood, the vampires live out in the open and are an accepted part of society. Feared, but accepted... for the most part. In the season opener, we meet Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who soon learns she is part fairy. One of her abilities is being able to hear the thoughts of the people around her, which, can be deafening. But, she meets a vampire by the name of Bill (Stephen Moyer), whose thoughts she can't hear for some reason. It's clear these two have a connection straight away.
7. The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries, based on the YA book series, ran for eight seasons from 2009-2017. The first season revolves around a bit of a love triangle. We start off with Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a teenage girl, who falls for a vampire by the name of Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). If a human-vampire mixed relationship weren't difficult enough to navigate, things get really complicated when Stefan's brother (Ian Somherhalder), also a vampire, falls for Elena. These two have been around for over 100 years, there must be really something about this girl to pull two vamps!!
8. iZombie

In the series opener of the horror-comedy iZombie Liv Moore (Rose McIver) is attacked when attending a boat party and wakes up a... zombie. She staves off the looming effects that come with being zombified by getting a job at the morgue and feeds off brains of the recently deceased. In order to protect her fiance Major (Robert Buckley) she breaks it off with him. But, then she has a change of heart and decides she should give him the chance to decide if he can be with her in her newfound state of being undead.
9. Merlin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkeFIclRlJU
Colin Morgan took on the title role of the BBC America series Merlin (2008-2012). He played the sorcerer as a young man, providing counsel to Prince Arthur (Bradley James). He spent most of his time protecting the city of Camelot and helping Arthur become the king he was destined to be. But one day, he found himself in love, when coming across a maiden named Freya (Laura Donnelly). They only spent a few days together, but sometimes that's all it takes. It seemed their love affair was cut short when Freya died, but this being a story involving supernatural... death doesn't always mean forever. Merlin meets her again a year later, when she appears as the Lady in the Lake.
10. Atlantis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loH69W1qcAg
And, finally, BBC America's Atlantis (2013-2015), takes us under the sea. Princess Ariadne (Aiysha Hart), daughter to King Minos (Alexander Siddig), is to marry Heptarian (Oliver Walker). She wishes she was just a regular girl and could marry anyone she likes. She has her eye set on Jason (Jack Donnelly), not realizing he's from the land above. He traveled to Atlantis via submarine, finding the legendary city by mistake. Either way, from Earth or Atlantis, he is still just a commoner. There's no way King Minos would approve.
