The LEGO Movie

You know how sometimes an event occurs in popular culture that is, at one and the same time astonishing and also, with the benefit of immediate hindsight, enormously predictable? This is one of those times. As a result, I feel a little giddy.

The producers of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs have embarked upon a full-length movie using LEGO characters. Of course they have! YouTube is full of LEGO animations, LEGO themselves are regularly beseiged with requests to make special kits based on all manner of popular movies, the (cough) brand synergy between LEGO and the movies is both high and meaty.

The LEGO Movie won’t hit cinema screens until next Valentine’s Day (because nothing says romance etc etc), but the first trailer came out this week, and it’s good, and Liam Neeson is in the film somewhere and oh my good lord they made a LEGO film and here’s the trailer here:

All very fine and lovely, portentious and silly in equal measure.

But if you want truly expressive use of those endearing little plastic building blocks, you’d have to go a long way to beat this:

I can’t wait to see the LEGO version of Sherlock Season 3.
